PreDuce PreUse PreCycle

Before you go on your weekly shop Pre-Think the 3Rs, Reduce Reuse Recycle!

Focus on the reduce and reuse phases, because by avoiding the recycle phase we avoid producing waste in the first place. Avoid items that generate waste, or choose items that generate less.

Is there the possibility to reuse a product for something else once it’s original function is over?

The aim is to reduce your waste, because although you may recycle much of it, additional energy is used in the recycling process.

Some may think that recycling makes them green, so they just carry on with their consumerism with a guilt free conscience! That is not living the green lifestyle. It takes an effort to pre-think your activities, especially your shopping!

But wait a minute, I’m not here to preach. Pre-thinking the 3Rs makes sense when you consider it will save you money, for example…

  • Buy concentrated detergents, they have much smaller packaging and last longer
  • Don’t buy small lunch packs, they may be convenient but it’s better to buy larger packs then to make your own lunch pack in a re-usable container
  • Use a reuseable bag instead of paying for disposable plastic bags which will take hundreds of years to decompose in a landfill site
  • Instead of buying paper towels, use a cloth equivalent which can be washed then used again. When it becomes a bit soiled it can be reused around the garage

By pre-thinking Reduce Reuse Recycle, you will find endless opportunities to save yourself money and to reduce your recycling. Make recycling your last resort! ;)

Sincerely,

Signature 3
