Quality Of Water
I don’t know about you, but my supposed drinking water tastes horrible direct from the faucet!
It’s allegedly clean, safe and drinkable, but I don’t know where it’s been or come from before it gets to me.
What I do know is that it tastes of chlorine and has probably been recycled a number of times.
What do I mean by recycled water I hear you ask?
Well living near the end of a major river as I do, I know that all the towns upstream withdraw water from the river for their use. That water is treated with chemicals like chlorine and fluoride, consumed by people, then it goes through a sewage treatment plant before being returned to the river.
This process is repeated by all the towns upstream of me as the water is recycled time and time again.
No wonder my water tastes so strongly of chlorine, the utility company has to use a strong chlorination process to kill the multitude of bacteria, viruses, algae, and fungi introduced into the river upstream!
Not only that, there are all the other contaminents introduced into the river by agriculture and industry, including heavy metals, chemicals and fertilizers.
All in all, a disgusting package of contamination I think you will agree!
Alternatives
My alternatives are pretty limited as it happens. I cannot access the building source so I have to tackle the problem in-house so as to speak.
I can either filter the water as I use it, or buy in alternate water as in bottled water.
The bottled water industry is in growth right now. The growth in plastic water bottles sold in the U.S. alone has grown from 3.3 billion in 1997 to 15 billion in 2002, with per capita consumption growing from 10.5 gallons in 1993 to 22.6 gallons in 2003!
This could be a way out for me, but the humble plastic water bottle has a huge environmental impact. Starting with the extraction of oil (which has it’s own impacts and energy usage), to the manufacture of the bottle, to transportation of raw material then finished item, to it’s waste disposal.
Not attractive, so my solution is to filter my water.
Solutions
The water filtration system I used to give me healthy fresh tasting drinking and
cooking water on tap, was this Aquasana system kit from Amazon shown on the left. There is an under sink water filter, with an extra counter top drinking water faucet.
It eliminates 99% of chlorine, lead, metals, and volatile organic compounds to deliver fresh tasting water.
In addition, I decided to eliminate plastic water bottles from my life entirely by getting myself a Clear2Go filtered water bottle. These are amazing and very cheap. For safe fresh portable water you can’t beat one of these.
You just fill your bottle with tap water from anywhere while you are on the go, then drink healthy great tasting water!
It’s Great for jogging, camping and hiking, gym, work and car. Just one filters life span eliminates 757 bought 16.9 oz bottles!
How’s that for a green lifestyle!
There are many options for greening your life, but might I suggest that this is one of the better ones. You enjoy healthy clean drinking water while benefiting the environment at the same time. It’s got win-win written all over it!
Sincerely,
P.S. Let me know your take on the bottled water debate by leaving me a comment below. Cheers
